Help Me Pick a Theme Song

by Alexa on November 14, 2009 · 46 comments

A few days ago, I made a post about a song that someone suggested “fit” me.  As a part of the commentary on that thread, as well as a back and forth on Twitter and with some friends of mine, there’s been discussion about an Alexa Theme Song.  Different people have different ideas about what fits me better.

So with that in mind, I thought I’d have a little bit of fun with this, and invite you guys to participate as well.

What I’d like is for you guys to nominate songs that you think “fit” me, or represent me in some fashion.  Once I get a sufficient collection, I’ll do a poll and let everyone vote and see how the results shake out.

So here’s what you can do if you’re so inclined:  In the comment space below, list a song (or songs) you think best fit me.  You can include links to or quote lyrics from it, as well as links to YouTube videos if you like.  As far as I’m concerned there are no limitations – no specific musical genre is off limits, no words or lyrics are off limits – anything you think fits me is fair game.  If you want to explain why you think it fits, feel free to do so.

In order for it to make the final list from which people will select the song that best fits me, though, at least one other person will have to agree with or support your suggestion (as in “seconding the motion”). So if you see that someone has posted a song that works for you, just reply to their post and say that you second it, or support it, or agree with it, etc.

I’ll let this run its course over the next few days, and then do another post with videos and lyrics for the final choices.  There’ll be a poll where you can vote on the finalists to decide which one the collective believes best fits Alexa.

I’ll go ahead and self-nominate the song from a few days ago:  Lovage: Stroker Ace.

This is an old song and may not get many votes, but I think it fits. She’s A Lady, by Tom Jones.

So when i get your tweets i smile and enjoy your blog and tumbler. So a song i also enjoy and is a classic about sex work is Roxanne. I think police did a version but any version of it will do. Roxanne you dont have to turn on the red light. not savy on links so if someone agrees the can post a link to song or lyrics hopefully.

Does this mean i might get to listen to music when i come to your blog? Maybe you could add a play list that just cycles the top however many songs? I think that would be neat. I don’t have a suggestion though :(. My genre of choice is country. I can’t think of any song that would make me think of you.

its sexy and the lyrics are awesome. im sure if i met you i’d be thinking “i’ve never met a girl like you before”

lyrics:
Edwyn Collins

A Girl Like You Lyrics

I’ve never known a girl like you before
Now just like in a song from days of yore
Here you come a knockin’, knockin’ at my door
And I’ve never met a girl like you before
You give me just a taste so I want more and more
Now my hands are bleeding and my knees are raw
Now you’ve got me crawlin’, crawlin’ on the floor
And I’ve never met a girl like you before
You’ve made me acknowledge the devil in me
I hope to God I’m talkin’ metaphorically
Hope that I’m talkin’ allegorically
Know that I’m talkin’ about the way I feel
And I’ve never known a girl like you before
Never, never, never, never
Never known a girl like you before
This old town’s changed so much
Don’t feel like I belong
Too many protest singers
Not enough protest songs
And now you’ve come along
Yes you’ve come along
And I’ve never met a girl like you before

So many songs, so little time. My two nominations are:

1. Milkshake by Kelis mainly because of the following lines…

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard
And their like “It’s better than yours”
Damn right, it’s better than yours
I can teach you, but I would have to charge

Link to song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZ-FAV9fBII

2. Mouth by Merrill Bainbridge mainly because of the following lines…

Would it be my fault if I could turn you on
Would I be so bad if I could turn you on
When I kiss your mouth I want to taste it
Turn you upside down don’t want to waste it
I jump on you, you jump on me
You pushed me out and even though you know I love you
I feel inclined to slap you in the mouth

Link to song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cZJiYOJtV4

Honourable mentions go to Maneater by Nelly Furtado, Cream by Prince, You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC and Born To Be Wild by Steppenwolf.

As I did before, in the last thyme song post u had, I suggested that your song should be “Sexy Bitch” by David Guetta feat. Akon. Everytime I hear that song it makes me think of you dancing it up at a club while some guy(in my head, its me) is decribing to his friend what he see when he looks at you.

Hope some people 2nd my song, either way I’ll TTYL. xoxo

Day One–Bedroom Dancing

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Knw3LBlOoUk

Do you wanna go dancing,
In a club?
We can have a good time,
And live it up.
‘Said if you wanna go dancing,
You got to wear a tuxedo,
And we could do the tango, wherever we go.
‘Said if you wanna do the tango,
Then we’re gonna need a ballroom,
So she took me by the hand,
And led me to her bedroom.
And then she did it,
Stripped me half-naked,
And told me, that her body, was sacred.
She said I could take it,
If I danced with her,
But somehow I knew
That she was an indian-giver.
I said “what about tomorrow?”,
She said “what about tonight?
She said “trust me baby, it’ll be alright”

She walked to him wearing Stiletto boots,
First woman, wedding, then honey moon
This girl that I thought I knew so well
didn’t know where until we’re at the hotel and,
We’re on the dancefloor,
By the seashore
She said “these nights we dance together,
Is what I live for” I said
“what about before,
Before these nights?”
She said “Ask me no questions and
I’ll tell you no lies”
I said “what about tomorrow?”
She said “what about tonight?
trust me baby, it’ll be alright”

And so we danced, and danced, and danced, and danced, and danced
So we danced, and danced, and danced, and danced, and danced
All night
All night
All night

Twelve o’clock, the music stopped,
She walked away from me,
And took her shoes off,
And she said “that’s it”,
And I knew it, she said
“We can’t dance, without music”
I said “we can dance tomorrow”,
She said “we’ve already danced tonight,
Trust me baby, you’ll be alright
It’ll be alright
It’ll be alright
It’ll be alright

Lucille Bogan – Alley Boogie,

I assume 1920s prostitution music isn’t going to get many votes, but anything by Lucille Bogan is “relevant.” Not to mention awesome.
http://www.last.fm/music/Lucille+Bogan/_/Alley+Boogie

I’m doing something now
I never done before
I’m going to do it this time
Ain’t going to do it no more
My Alley Boogie
The only thing I choose
And it’s the only thing I do to drive away my blues

I boogied all night
and the night before
when I woke up this morning I want to boogie somemore
Oh Alley Boogie
Only thing I crave
I can do my alley boogie so many different ways

I got a bed in my bedroom
pallet on my floor
I got to do my alley boogie everywhere I go
because I’m wild about my boogie
only thing I crave
good alley boogie
carry me to my grave

mama loves her boogie
papa loves it too
and it runs in my family that’s all I like to do
I’m wild about my boogie
only thing I crave
I’m going to do my boogie
the rest of my days

Papa got a watch
brother got a ring
sister got an armfull of alley boogie that thing
she’s wild about her boogie
only thing she’d choose
now she got to do her boogie
to buy her alley baby some shoes

now I done song this song
holler out swift
and ain’t no body bought no alley boogie yet
and I’m wild about my boogie
only thing I crave
I been doing my alley boogie
I been boogying all my days

I’m going old-school.

“The Look” by Roxette. You may not have heard of this one, but it’s one of the sexiest songs *ever* recorded. And the lyrics fit to boot. If you haven’t heard it, trust me, do yourself a favor.

http://www.lyricsdownload.com/roxette-she-s-got-the-look-lyrics.html

1-2-3-4
walking like a man
hitting like a hammer
she’s a juvenile scam.
Never was a quitter
tasty like a raindrop
she’s got the look.

Heavenly bound cause heaven’s got a number
when she’s spinning me around
kissing is a colour.
Her loving is a wild dog
she’s got the look.

chorus:
She’s got the look.
(She’s got the look.)
She’s got the look.
(She’s got the look.)
What in the world can make a brown-eyed girl turn blue.
When everything I’ll ever do I’ll do for you and I go:
la la la la la she’s got the look.

Fire in the ice naked to the t-bone is a lover’s disguise.
Banging on the head drum
shaking like a mad bull
she’s got the look.

Swaying to the band
moving like a hammer
she’s a miracle man.
Loving is the ocean
kissing is the wet sand
she’s got the look.

Chorus

walking like a man
hitting like a hammer
she’s a juvenile scam.
Never was a quitter
tasty like a raindrop
she’s got the look.

Chorus

What in the world can make you so blue,
When everything I’ll ever do I’ll do for you and I go:
Sha-na-na-na-na…etc.
shes got the look
shes got the look
She’s got the look
shes got the look

You might look to the Cole Porter anniversary album “Red Hot + Blue” for some spiced up editions of songs with double meanings and then some. Some songs “Too Darn Hot” by Erasure, “Night and Day” by U2, and “So in Love” by k.d.lang.

Starkillers- Scream

Can you make me feel like a star?
Can you make me shake and scream?
Can you make me beg now baby
Can I leave you loving me?

Can you make me loose my mind?
Can you tease me?
Can you make me wanna dream?
Can you please me?
If we did it on a magazine,
If we did it on a silver screen,
If we did it on the bathroom floor,
Would you girlfriend call me a whore?

Can you make me feel like a star?
Can you make me shake and scream?
Can you make me beg now baby
Can I leave you loving me?

“Oh My God”
Pink (feat. Peaches)

Put me on the table
Make me say your name
If I can’t remember
Then give me all your pain
I can sit and listen
Or I can make you scream
Kiss it and make it better
Just put your trust in me

[Chorus]
Oh my God, go a little slower
Oh my God, what was that again
La da da, let me feel you baby
Let me in, ’cause I understand
Let me feel you baby
‘Cause I understand

[Rap]
I understand all
Now climb my sugar walls
Problem solved it’s dissolved
with the solvent known as spit
Lickity lick not so quick it’s a
Slick ride make my mink slide
‘Cause were all pink inside

This can be really easy
It doesn’t have to be hard
Here baby let me show you
I’ll have ya, climbing up the walls
You got all the problems
I think that I can solve
Why don’t you come in here baby
Why don’t we sit and talk

My vote goes to Stroker Ace, and then alternately “Frozen” by Celldweller.

Inside this fantasy
It seems so real to me
Synthetic ecstasy, when her legs are open
True Life behind a wall
Where men and angels fall
A fading memory, when my mind is frozen

I can see a frozen point in time
Where her figure still awaits
Tongue of fire tracing lips outline
Where frozen breath originates

With one motion of her wanting eyes
She strips everything away
This one moment is intensified
And the colors all fade to grey

I am in the only place that i want to be
Though we know that it ends eventually
But it’s alright because right now we’re frozen

“I want to forget mistakes they’ve helped me make
It’s better to be broken than to break”

Inside this fantasy
It seems so real to me
Synthetic ecstasy, when her legs are open
True Life behind a wall
Where men and angels fall
A fading memory, when my mind is frozen

I can see a frozen point in time
That is easy to retrace
Light and darkness are both intertwined
The elements are in their place with

One motion of her wanting mind
The real world begins to fade
And all the hateful things I have become
Temporarily go away

Inside this fantasy
It seems so real to me
Synthetic ecstasy, when her legs are open
True Life behind a wall
Where men and angels fall
A fading memory, when my mind is frozen

When my mind’s frozen:

I’ll take you anwhere you want to go
Far from anything that feels like home (lets go)
You are anyone I want to be (it’s here and now, and now it’s only you and me)

It’s never enough (mmm that’s true)
I want to stay here (yeah, and I do too)
Breakin’ it down(takin’ it down)
With smell(smell), touch(touch), taste(taste), sight(sight), and sound(sound)

How long will I be here without you near because I’m so cold
Break them first or I’ll get broken is not what I was told, now I’m so cold
I’m so cold
So cold

Inside this fantasy
It seems so real to me
Synthetic ecstasy, when her legs are open
True Life behind a wall
Where men and angels fall
A fading memory, when my mind is frozen

Inside this fantasy
It seems so real to me
Synthetic ecstasy, when her legs are open
True Life behind a wall
Where men and angels fall
A fading memory, when my mind is frozen

A relatively little-known, but kick-ass, song from AC/DC’s Highway To Hell that…fits, I’d say. ;-)

Girls Got Rhythm

I been around the world, I’ve seen a million girls
Ain’t one of them got, what my lady she’s got
She stealin’ the spotlight, knocks me off my feet
She’s enough to start a landslide
Just walkin’ down the street
Wearin’ dresses so tight, and lookin’ dynamite
About to blow me out
No doubt about it, can’t live without it

The girl’s got rhythm
The girl’s got rhythm
She got the back seat rhythm
The girl’s got rhythm

She’s like a lethal brand, too much for any man
She gives me first degree, she really satisfies me
Love me till I’m legless, achin’ and sore
Enough to stop a freight train
Or start the Third World War
You know I’m losin’ sleep, but I’m in too deep
Like a body needs blood
No doubt about it, can’t live without it

The girl’s got rhythm
The girl’s got rhythm
She got the back seat rhythm
The girl’s got rhythm

You know she moves like sin, and when she lets me in
It’s like liquid love
No doubt about it, can’t live without it

The girl’s got rhythm
The girl’s got rhythm

Hi Alexa!

I think I may have the purrrr-fect (cat lover, can’t you tell? LOL) theme song for you, it’s an old one from the ’70’s (I’m aging myself here, folks…) by Donna Summer and it’s called “Bad Girls” and it’s always been one of my favorites by her. Here’s the YouTube link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ_KbwEVBjU

There’s also another one from the ’70’s by the sister group “LaBelle” entitled “Lady Marmalade” about the Madame of a famous New Orleans brothel and here’s the link for that:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuyRW31u4Zs

This song has also been covered by the likes of Pink, Christina Aguilera, and there’s also a version by the Pussycat Dolls on YouTube but I prefer the original by LaBelle myself. (Old school, what can I say? LOL)

…and there’s another song you might like to check out although it may not be the best theme song for you but it does tell a very interesting story. It’s a song called “Trick of the Light” which was written by John Entwhistle, the late bassit for the rock group “The Who”. It’s about a young man who thinks the “lady of the night” he’s been seeing has developed strong emotional feelings for him when they’re together. Ironically, Entwhistle died in bed in a Las Vegas hotel room around 2002 from a cocaine overdose. He had been in the company of a local Vegas stripper and they went to bed after a night of “binging” on coke and when she woke the next morning, she was unable to revive Entwhistle who was “cold and unresponsive”. He pretty much lived and died by the song he wrote as he never married or had kids and enlisted the services of prostitutes quite frequently. That’s why I think the song “Trick of the Light” was more or less an auto bio of himself. None the less, it’s a great tune, very haunting, and it begs the musical question, “Was I allright? Did I take you to the height of ecstasy?” It’s been one of my favs from The Who ever since I first heard it in 1978 when I graduated high school in SF. The tune was never an “official” song in The Who’s library and is rather hard to find on any of The Who’s albums. There are several versions of it on YouTube and if I’m not mistaken, the group “Bad Company” does a cover of it as well. So here’s the YouTube link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6fFtWi318s

I hope you find these tunes to your liking and I wish you much success in your quest…

One thing I haven’t heard from you is what “mood” you want to set with “your” song, e.g. seductive, freedom, fuck, aggressive, submissive, ethereal, etc.

Many fine songs have been recommended but in the short list we eventually should vote for should include ONLY the songs you feel come closest to fitting your signature approach.

Hi Princess:

It’s Joe again…there’s another song I wanted to toss into the ring but forgot to in my earlier post, this one is called “Private Dancer” by Tina Turner and it’s about a woman who’s “in the biz”. It came out about 1985 and it was a pretty big hit for her. I remember her waaaay back when she was with her husband Ike Turner who passed away not too long ago. He had been very dominating, abusive, and controlling with her until she left him and started a new life and career without him. And luckily for her, she never had to look back either! A living legend, no doubt! Here’s the YouTube link for this as well, I think you’ll like it. So enjoy Alexa, OK? All the best to you! ;o)

Being an old guy and not knowing all the new stuff called music today I can only think of one song that mite fit, tho I dont recall any of your tweets being this “available?” and that song is Sweet Painted Lady by Elton John, its an oldie but kind of a love song to the trade from a seamans (sailors) point of view. Listen to it if you dont know it maybe it will fit ya, just a thought Enjoy your tweets and love your foto collection
