In response to my post a couple of days ago about Lady Gaga (among others), I had several people ask me who my favorite singer is. It might surprise you. In fact, unless you live in Europe, Germany specifically, you may not have even heard of her. Her name is Sarah Connor. And, no, this is not the Sarah Connor of Terminator fame.
Sarah is a German singer with an incredible voice – strong lungs, excellent range, good control, nice timbre – just the whole package for what I like in a singer’s voice. I don’t even recall where I heard her music the first time, but my ears perked up with that first song and it took a considerable amount of work to figure out who she was and where I could find more of her. Her music isn’t even sold here in the U.S., in fact, with the exception of one song that has some limited success. I’ve got about 20 of her songs on my iPod and between them they practically have more play time than all of the other music I have on my iPod combined.
Here are my favorite songs from her. What’s interesting about Sarah is that she sound just as good in a live performance as she does on a recording – not always true for most singers. She sings with a lot of emotion and that emotion is transferred to the listener (or the audience in a live performance). Enjoy the music.
This is Living to Love You.
In this particular song, One Last Dance, she’s singing with Marc Terenzi, an American who she met and, according to both of them, fell in love at first sight. You can easily see their chemistry in this video. They got married and had two children, but sadly, as of last year, they’re now divorced.
In this song, From Sarah With Love, you can hear the power in her voice. This has been her most popular song.
This one is called Skin on Skin. I get chill bumps at 3:19.
So there you have it – my favorite singer. Now you know a little more about me than you did before you spent your glorious time reading the post and listening to the music.

I remember her from when I lived in Switzerland. I was never much of a fan – its not really my kind of music – but I am surprised that she isn’t better known outside the German speaking world. I suppose it just goes to show that whether someone becomes famous or not has a large component of chance.
Under My Skin was on repeat at my house for months last year. I’ve never really been a fan of her slow songs, but I’m glad to know I’m not the only American that knows of her existence…
Matthew, I, too, am glad there’s another American who’s heard of her.
