John. Trick. Customer. Client.
All common names for the patrons of prostitutes. John and trick of course are slang terms used on the street for those people. Everyone has heard these references on just about every television show with a law enforcement theme. The play cops have to refer to the clients as “johns” to maintain their pseudo street-cred to sound cool and in-the-know to those who watch their exploits on TV.
The term john is believed to have originated from the customer practice of giving their name as ‘John’, a common name in English-speaking countries, in an effort to maintain anonymity. The word trick comes from customer’s practices of trying to trick the women into doing more than the customer pays for.
What about the sex workers; what do they call their customers? I know when I interviewed the streetwalkers for my honors project in undergrad, almost all of them referred to the guys as tricks, with some occasionally referring to them as johns. The women who work in the brothels generally referred to their clients as customers, and the escorts I’ve talked to alternated between customer and client. As I mentioned here in reference to the CNBC story on high-end prostitution, I prefer using the term client.
So what’s the difference, you ask?
According to American Heritage Dictionary, both customer and client can be defined as “a person who purchases goods or services from another.” However, they only list that one definition for customer; they provide five other definitions for client. Among these, client is also defined as “the party for which professional services are rendered, as by an attorney.”
The main difference between a customer and a client, then, is that a protective, ongoing business relationship is formed with a client, but not necessarily with a customer. Basically, a customer is a one-off transaction and a client is someone with whom you try to establish a partnership or similar relationship with. This makes sense when you frame it within the context of the type of relationship a brothel prostitute has (generally a one time deal, though that’s not always the case), vs. the type of longer-term relationship I seek to build with the people I see.
If you will recall from my earlier posts, my goal was to develop a recurring base of clients, and that is largely what I have done. I have had a couple of appointments that I would suggest fall into the category of “customer,” but since I am providing a professional service to these people, the term client is a much more appropriate nomenclature in light of the accepted definition of the words as outlined above.
Besides, I think client just sounds, well, more professional. Don’t you?

I always love reading your posts, whether they are on sex, the sex biz, or something in between….As you know (and as those who read my comments here or check my blog know), I’ve seen my share of escorts (we call ourselves “clients” or “hobbyists”), but as of yet haven’t had the opportunity to make your acquaintance in person (I guess that makes me a “consumer” but not a “client/customer” of yours).
That being said, I feel like I know you–and trust you. I’ve connected with you on myspace (where I use this Ronald10021 alias) but am hesitant to connect on Facebook (where I can only use my real identity–they canceled my Ronald10021 account as being fraudulent and you can’t appeal their decisions) because I’m not sure I want to risk merging any part of my fantasy life with my real life (i.e., how did you meet Alexa and did you know what she does?–no judgments by me but perhaps by others, including my wife)……
And as an aside, I have to confess to be overwhelmed by Facebook (real account), MySpace (alias account), Linkedin (real account), Twitter (no account), Tumblr (no account), WordPress (no account), Blogspot (alias account), etc.
I understand your predicament, Ron. Not only do I have this persona for which I have to manage multiple accounts, but I also have my private persona and perhaps one or two more. It does get to be a bit overwhelming from time to time. The ability to merge many of these through Twitter and the cross posting of information helps out a lot, though.
I’m glad you…enjoy me, if only vicariously for the time being.
How do you merge them at Twitter? Do you want the multiple IDs to be merged? I need a Twitter Primer….will go look in a bit…
The word client , yes, it’s professional, but then you get the men , that want the fantasy, and really want to think they are not just another trick, another john, or another client. You know, the ones that get insulted because we call them client or customer. So we must call them ‘ friend’. LOL…
Yeah, thats just part of the demographics where I AM from – and YES – That sucks LOL ..
How has this profession changed (if any) what you do with your body? I know in one post you had to tell someone that they couldn’t leave marks on your body but what about body modifications and stuff like that? Do you tell people ahead of time what piercings and tattoos you have? Have you had anyone ask before they meet you? I believe that one man expressed his liking of your tattoo, is that common with it and/or your other piercings?
I am in the mental health field and I call my patients/customers “clients” as well. Maybe I should tell them that escorts use the term, too. How do you think they’d respond? Haha.
Keeley, I’ll add your questions to the next round in my Q&A series.
Hey, Britni. Welcome to the blog.
I think I’d base my response on what kind of patients you deal with.
Fortunately I’m not in a similar situation but use my Facebook account as a networking tool. Being a photographer, the majority of individuals I know only as friends of friends or as potential models/clients that I will work with in the future. It becomes confusing as I have real friends and potential clients and have to balance the 2. I’d love to see how this modern intelligent open-minded amazonian wordsmith called Alexa looks. Ironically I usually meet models evaluate them based on physical appearance before I see their true self. With you the exact opposite is in play. Your blog acts as a window to your soul.
Hey, Kevin.
I’d love to see how this modern intelligent open-minded amazonian wordsmith called Alexa looks.
Well, for the right price…
Ironically I usually meet models evaluate them based on physical appearance before I see their true self. With you the exact opposite is in play. Your blog acts as a window to your soul.
Interesting perspective.
