3,091 Miles

May 30, 2008

I was doing some trip planning today. It is 3,091 miles from Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco. Assuming we can travel an average of 70 mph across the duration of the trip, and about 8 hours of driving time each day, it will take us about 5 days to get there. I doubt we’ll drive just 8 hours each day, though. At least, in the beginning. Fortunately, Nikki is going with me, so we’ll be able to swap out the driving chores.

That is a LOT of fucking time in the car, especially a small one. My little Eclipse is going to hate me for weeks after I get done. We can’t even put the top down because traveling in a convertible on the Interstate is a bit too windy.  Almost the entire trip in on one highway, too - Interstate 10!  Haha!  How boring is that?

Yep, the ol’ Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Freeway. B-o-r-i-n-g. You need about 300 CDs handy - get a few travel cases (the ones that hold about 20-30 each) if you don’t have any. Because you can’t trust the radio in some of the hills/deserts.

Then rotate them in/out of your big cardboard box in the trunk every night. Or, if you are more hip, just get the iPod player hookup for your car, and play the 3,000 songs already loaded on it through your car stereo. Yes, 21st century technology rules.

And one more thing - go ahead and stop for at least 8 hours sleep every night (at a cheap but safe motel.) My buddy and I tried the macho, straight through, 4 hour drive/sleep shifts trip one time, and it almost got us killed! Each of us fell asleep at the wheel at least once - not good.

    You’ll thank me later…

You know… there really is something magical tho about driving across the country. We used to drive from Boston to Palm Beach and we always found ourselves feeling a little closer to each other when the trip was done.

We have some great memories of those days…

I think this will be very special for you and Nikki — and I think when you two think back and remember it years from now, the memory will bring smiles to your faces.

It’s a little corny — but my I95 is the same as your I95. :P

(I think about these things when I’m not sleeping all day!) lmao!

Tie your hair back princess diva! lol!

Actually, I have an XM radio receiver in the car, so finding radio stations won’t be an issue. And, as you suggest, I have my iPod, which does have 800+ songs on it. ;-)

    You gorgeous bitch.

Perhaps you’re right. I hadn’t thought of that.

You’re a freak. However, I have looked longingly up I-95 thinking about that myself, so I guess I can’t call you a freak. Can I? :P

    Safe travels…

nina is right about remembering the big trip west you and nikki will share. It all seems corny now, but it won’t in years to come. So enjoy.

I would you turn north around New Orleans, go through Dallas and Oklahoma City and then go west on I-40 (through northern New Mexico and Arizona) instead of the very southern route. Albequerque is nice; you could go to Santa Fe, which would be a little out of the way, but VERY nice; Flagstaff is nicer and cooler than Phoenix, and you could see the Grand Canyon; in California, you could head north through the desert toward SF and avoid LA (unless you don’t want to avoid LA). I actually played around with mapquest and at one point I came up with a stat for that route showing it was actually a little shorter.

Whatever way you go, have a great, safe trip. I am jealous.

Not while I’m longingly looking south…

If you are driving 8 hours a day - which translates to being in the car for at least 10 hours a day with lunch, supper and pee breaks- just take the fastest route. I would otherwise agree with the suggestion of swinging north and taking I-40 but you’re not going to really stop to delight in it anyway, so what’s the point?
My pattern seems to be that the first two days I’m really excited and drive about 12 hours. The next two days are tediously boring and filled with lots more breaks, and the last day is the drive from hell just to get ‘there’ and out of the damn car, lol.

Have a great time. Send postcards.

That’s what I am afraid is going to happen to us! lol ;-)

I am looking at alternative routes and see if they will work out better for us.

Wow, that’s a very long way. I wouldn’t drive, I’d just take the plane :) But good luck!

Got something to say?
